Former India coach Greg Chappell believes Rishabh Pant is transforming the game of cricket with his unconventional batting style. Chappell emphasized Pant's match-winning capabilities, noting his significant impact during the Headingley Test.
Despite India's loss in the Headingley Test, Pant's exceptional performance, marked by centuries in both innings, highlighted his ability to shift the momentum of a game.
Chappell lauded Pant's rapid scoring rate, which creates opportunities to secure victories. He described Pant's performance as "phenomenal," remarking that some of his shots defied traditional coaching manuals. "He is reinventing the game as a batsman," Chappell stated.
Pant achieved a milestone by becoming only the second wicketkeeper-batter, after Andy Flower, to achieve a century in each innings of a Test match.
Chappell acknowledged the influence of modern technology and advanced bats on the game, enabling shots that were previously impossible. He expressed his excitement in watching Pant play, noting his unpredictable approach. According to Chappell, Pant's willingness to charge fast bowlers and execute innovative shots keeps the opposition constantly on edge.
Drawing comparisons, Chappell likened Pant to Adam Gilchrist, another influential wicketkeeper-batsman.
He said, "What an exciting cricketer, what a player to have on your team. When I first saw him, he was a different sort of player, of course, but he reminded me very much of Adam Gilchrist. You know the difference that it can make to a team to have a wicketkeeper that can bat at that level and score runs quickly."
Chappell also commented on Shubman Gill's debut as captain, deeming it a promising start with room for improvement. He acknowledged India's loss but highlighted the positives and the valuable lessons learned by the team and Gill. Chappell believes that with improved catching and stronger tail-end batting, future results could be different, remaining optimistic about the remaining Test matches.
