Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron has openly criticized Ravindra Jadeja's performance during the final day of the first Test against England at Headingley. Jadeja, a senior left-arm spinner for India, faced scrutiny for his lack of accuracy as England successfully chased a challenging target, securing a five-wicket victory and taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
Ravindra Jadeja under pressure during the first Test.
Speaking on Star Sports’ Follow the Blues, Aaron suggested that Jadeja failed to capitalize on the rough patches present on the fifth-day pitch.
“More than the reverse sweeps, if we go back and view that footage when Jadeja was bowling over the wicket, I would say he missed the rough a lot. He bowled either too short or he was bowling too fast, too full. They were all pitching in the middle of the wicket, not on the rough,” Aaron stated, highlighting Jadeja’s inability to consistently target areas that would trouble the batsmen.
Jadeja’s final figures of 1 for 104 in 24 overs reflected a lack of control and effectiveness, which India desperately needed during England's run chase. Ben Duckett, in particular, found it relatively easy to execute reverse sweeps and disrupt Jadeja’s rhythm, contributing to England's confident and aggressive approach.
Aaron further expressed his disappointment at Jadeja’s failure to rise to the occasion, especially considering his extensive experience.
“Somebody who is really experienced, who bowls into the rough really well, especially in Indian conditions where there is a lot of rough, and he and (Ravichandran) Ashwin have stitched together so many match-winning performances, you would back him to bowl into the rough on the fifth day and secure India a very historic victory,” he added.
This criticism serves as a wake-up call for the Indian bowling unit, which struggled to counter England’s aggressive batting style. While Jadeja has often been a key performer in crucial situations, his underwhelming performance at Leeds has initiated discussions regarding India’s bowling strategies, especially when playing overseas.
