The FIFA Club World Cup 2025, in its revamped format, has delivered a compelling narrative as it progresses towards the Round of 16. This edition boasts an expanded roster of teams, a redesigned trophy, multiple host cities, and the innovative "referee cam," bringing fans closer to the action. The tournament, hosted in the United States, mirrors the grandeur of its older sibling, the quadrennial World Cup.
Organizers have framed the event as "a celebration of hope, excellence, and pride," uniting clubs, players, and fans through their shared passion for soccer. With numerous teams making their debut and the tournament spanning a month, its significance has undoubtedly grown.
Featuring teams from all six confederations – 12 from Europe, 6 from South America, 4 from Africa, 4 from Asia, 4 from North, Central America and the Caribbean, 1 from Oceania, and the host nation's representative – the 2025 lineup is complete.
As the group stage concludes and the final 16 prepare for the next round, this Club World Cup has been a stage for unexpected results, classic underdog stories, and intense rivalries, both on and off the field.
Auckland City, ranked a distant 4,971st in the Opta Power Rankings, entered the tournament as the lowest-ranked team. Placed in a group with Bayern Munich, Benfica, and Boca Juniors, their chances appeared slim. The New Zealand-based club, comprised of amateur players from the Northern League (a 12-team competition), faced a daunting task.
Their tournament began with a harsh 0-10 defeat against Bayern Munich, the largest margin of victory thus far, followed by a 0-6 loss to Benfica.
Facing Argentinian powerhouse Boca Juniors in their final match, Auckland City, already eliminated, played with nothing to lose. In a classic David versus Goliath encounter, the amateurs held Boca to a 1-1 draw, denying the South American giants a crucial victory needed to advance to the Round of 16. The result, considering the 4,819-point ranking difference, was a significant achievement for Auckland City.
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, drawn into a group with Porto, Al Ahly, and Palmeiras, defied expectations by securing a spot in the Round of 16. Led by Messi, and supported by former Barcelona stars Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, Miami finished second in Group A.
Despite securing only one win, it proved sufficient for qualification. After a draw against Al Ahly in their opening match, Miami faced Porto. Messi's brilliance, highlighted by a stunning free kick, led Miami to a 2-1 victory. A 2-2 draw against Palmeiras in their final match sealed their place in the knockout stage.
The final matchday in Group E saw tensions flare as River Plate needed a win against Inter to progress. Inter, however, spoiled their plans. The final whistle sparked a confrontation between River's Marcos Acuna and Inter's Denzel Dumfries, requiring intervention from both teams' personnel. The rivalry, stemming from a heated 2022 World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and the Netherlands, saw Acuna taunt Dumfries with a shin guard displaying the World Cup trophy logo.
Beyond on-field clashes, extreme heat presented challenges. Teams resorted to ice baths and cold towels to cool down players. Borussia Dortmund even had substitutes watch their game against Mamelodi Sundowns from the locker room to escape the heat, with their coach describing the conditions as a "sauna." Thunderstorms and lightning caused delays in at least five matches.
Adding another layer, ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) was present at the tournament, marking a first for such an event. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) also participated, requiring non-citizens to provide proof of legal status to attend games.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, less than a year away, this Club World Cup has highlighted several potential issues. Pitch quality, extreme heat, and weather-related disruptions have plagued the tournament.
Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham criticized the pitch conditions, stating, "The pitches aren’t great here. The pitches aren’t great at all," after his team's match against Pachuca in Charlotte.
Despite the surprises and underdog stories, the tournament has largely followed the expected script, with European giants like Real Madrid and Manchester City remaining among the favorites to lift the trophy. However, several teams – Seattle Sounders, Urawa Reds, Ulsan, Wydad AC, and Pachuca – were eliminated without earning a single point.
