Nasser Hussain supports Jofra Archer's return to England's Test squad as a worthwhile risk, but advises against immediately including him in the second Test against India at Edgbaston. Former England captain Nasser Hussain has shared his perspective on Jofra Archer's inclusion in the England Test squad, describing it as a "gamble worth taking." However, he also advised caution regarding his immediate entry into the playing XI for the second Test against India at Edgbaston.

Archer, whose last Test appearance was in February 2021, has been named in the squad for the second Test, commencing on July 2nd. The 30-year-old has been struggling with elbow and back injuries, recently returning to red-ball cricket for Sussex, where he bowled 18 overs against Durham, securing figures of 1/32.

Hussain, in his comments to Sky Sports, acknowledged the emotional and physical challenges Archer has faced: "Firstly, it's great news for Archer and England. Jofra has endured so much with his injuries, the rehab, the pain, and the mental challenges of repeated setbacks. It’s fantastic to see him back in the squad… considering he hasn't played a Test match in four years."

He further cautioned against immediately including Archer in the XI at Edgbaston. "I think it's too much of a risk this week. It may have gone exceptionally well – I don't know Jofra Archer's physical condition intimately – but if it has, they might consider playing him this week. The question then becomes, who do you leave out?"

Despite these reservations, Hussain expressed optimism about the long-term benefits of Archer's return. "I do think it is a gamble worth taking, but I'm uncertain if this week is the right time. I would consider it more strongly a week later at Lord's."

England currently leads the five-match series 1-0, following their five-wicket victory at Leeds. The remainder of the squad remains unchanged for the Edgbaston Test.
