Shimron Hetmyer delivered a stunning performance, smashing a last-ball six to secure a thrilling three-wicket victory for the Seattle Orcas against MI New York in a record-breaking chase in the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season.
Shimron Hetmyer hits the winning six for Seattle Orcas
The Orcas successfully chased down a monumental target of 238, the highest in MLC history, thanks to Hetmyer's explosive hitting. He remained calm under pressure and dispatched Kieron Pollard's final delivery over the boundary to seal the win.
Earlier in the match, MI New York posted a formidable 237/4, led by captain Nicholas Pooran's magnificent unbeaten 108 off just 60 balls, which included 7 fours and 8 sixes. Tajinder Dhillon provided valuable support with a rapid 95 off 35 deliveries.
Despite the onslaught, the Orcas bowlers, Gerald Coetzee and Kyle Mayers, managed to grab two wickets each, slowing down the scoring rate to some extent.
Seattle's chase began poorly, with Josh Brown and Shayan Jahangir falling early in the powerplay.
Kyle Mayers (37 off 20) and captain Sikandar Raza (30 off 9) then launched a swift counter-attack, bringing the Orcas back into the game. Heinrich Klaasen contributed a quick 26 off 13 balls before being dismissed by debutant Rushil Ugarkar.
This set the stage for Hetmyer's remarkable innings.
With the required run rate increasing and wickets falling, Hetmyer shifted gears and unleashed a barrage of boundaries. He ended up with an unbeaten 97 off just 40 balls, including 5 fours and 9 sixes, achieving an incredible strike rate of 242.50.
In the dramatic final over, with five runs needed for victory, Hetmyer faced Kieron Pollard. He expertly flicked the ball over fine leg for a six, sparking jubilant celebrations in the Seattle Orcas camp. This shot could be remembered as one of the most significant sixes of his T20 career.
"This one is one of the best, because our backs were against the wall and I'm still grimacing over the last game where we couldn't cross the line," said Hetmyer, who was named Player of the Match.
"Today is one of those days, where I went with a clear mind and wanted to take the game as deep as possible. That (injury) actually gave me a little bit of help, because I didn't want to run much," he added.
