India U-19 wicketkeeper Harvansh Singh Pangalia lives by a simple yet powerful mantra: "Trying to do better." This mantra, inspired by a dialogue from the movie Spider-Man 2, reflects his unwavering determination to improve and excel.
Harvansh's Instagram bio echoes this sentiment, a testament to his commitment to continuous self-improvement. A Marvel enthusiast, he draws inspiration from a scene in the 2004 Spider-Man film where Peter Parker, played by Tobey Maguire, responds to a critique with the simple phrase: "Trying to do better."
"There's something about that scene, that dialogue," Harvansh told TimesofIndia.com. "The answer gives me goosebumps."
The 18-year-old recently showcased his explosive batting talent in a practice match against Young Lions Invitational XI. Coming in with the score at 251/7, he blazed a trail with a stunning century off just 52 balls, including nine sixes. This propelled India to a formidable total of 442/9.
Videos of his six-hitting spree have gone viral, turning him into an overnight sensation on social media. Yet, the young cricketer remains grounded, still marveling at how he managed such a remarkable innings.
"I was struggling," Harvansh confessed. "The first five balls I faced, I was all at sea, failing to connect a single one. I was batting on 13 off 23 balls... But then something happened. Something snapped, aap keh sakte ho ki maata aa gayi (you could say I was possessed!)," he added with a laugh.
Hailing from Gandhidham, Gujarat, Harvansh was introduced to cricket by his father, Damandeep Singh, and uncle, Kunwarajeet Singh, both of whom were wicketkeepers. While his family, including his father, now resides in Canada, Harvansh chose to stay in Gandhidham with his mother to pursue his cricketing aspirations. His father works as a truck driver in Canada to support the family.
"Whenever I step out to bat, I see the faces of my mother and father... They have sacrificed so much for me," Harvansh shared.
Harvansh admires Yuvraj Singh's unwavering spirit and determination to win the World Cup while battling cancer. He also draws inspiration from the late Kobe Bryant and his "Mamba Mentality," particularly his relentless work ethic.
Furthermore, he aspires to play Test cricket for India, influenced by Virat Kohli's emphasis on Test cricket as the ultimate test of character.
"Test ka naam test hai because it tests your character... That's the ultimate cricket," he stated.
While acknowledging the success of his teammates Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, who have already secured IPL contracts, Harvansh remains focused on his own path.
"They do inspire all of us, but everyone has a different path," he said. "Mera bhi time aayega (My time will come as well)."
