Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, is set to open source its Grok chatbot this week. This move aligns with Musk's advocacy for accessible artificial intelligence (AI) for the benefit of humanity. He has been a vocal critic of OpenAI's shift towards a profit-driven model, arguing that AI should be available to all.
"This week, @xAI will open source Grok," Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter).
Open-sourcing a software like a chatbot means the source code is accessible to everyone, allowing for redistribution of the software projects. This provides enterprises with greater flexibility in addressing issues, as they are not solely reliant on internal teams for solutions.
The announcement follows a user suggestion that OpenAI should adopt a similar approach.
"OpenAI should do the same if they are ‘open’ that is," the user stated. Musk responded sharply, "OpenAI is a lie."
Musk has previously expressed his support for open-source AI, stating, "I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing."
His AI company, xAI, recently launched Grok, its chatbot, after a reported four-month development period. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded with a post showcasing how Grok could be built using a single prompt on GPT Builder.
"GPTs can save a lot of effort," Altman quipped.
Musk responded with displeasure, stating, "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine."
