England's recent thrilling victory over India at Headingley has sparked debate about just how high a target they could have chased. Following the win, Jos Buttler and Stuart Broad reflected on the match, suggesting the team was confident enough to chase even 450 runs.
Speaking on their YouTube podcast 'For The Love of Cricket', Buttler lauded England's aggressive approach, highlighting pivotal moments that shifted the game's momentum.
India initially dominated, posting a formidable 471, fueled by centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. England responded strongly, narrowing the gap to just six runs. India then added 364 in their third innings. However, England, led by a brilliant 149 from Ben Duckett and a steady performance from Jamie Smith, chased down the 371-run target with apparent ease.
Buttler confidently stated, "I think it would've come down to time, but even if they were chasing 450, they'd have given it a go. They cruised that 370," emphasizing England's control and fluency during the final innings.
He acknowledged that a higher target would necessitate greater risk-taking. However, he expressed faith in England's batting lineup, particularly the top seven, to embrace the challenge. "They’d have had to take more risks, but they’d definitely have had a go at it,” Buttler affirmed.
This mindset aligns with Captain Ben Stokes' well-known aversion to draws, a defining characteristic of England's "Bazball" approach. Under the guidance of Coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes, England has consistently pursued ambitious fourth-innings targets with unwavering determination.
With a 1-0 series lead and momentum on their side, England heads to Edgbaston with a significant victory and a clear intention to continue pushing boundaries.
