Gill remained composed, but his field placements faced criticism.

Shubman Gill Faces Leadership Test After India's Defeat Against England

Before the first Test against England, Shubman Gill made a bold statement: "My first aim is to become the highest run-scorer of the series." The young batter backed up his words by becoming the fifth Indian to score a century on his India captaincy debut. However, despite his personal success, India suffered a defeat, going 0-1 down in the series.

While the captaincy didn't affect Shubman Gill's batting, his leadership skills are evidently still developing. Leading in England presents a significant learning curve for the 25-year-old, who is the fifth youngest Indian cricketer to captain in Tests. The challenge is amplified by a strong England batting lineup and pitches that don't heavily favor bowlers. A trial by fire, indeed.

"These are tough places to lead and it is like pushing someone into the deep sea. He batted phenomenally well in the first innings and will learn on the job as he goes on," coach Gautam Gambhir said.

However, some have questioned Gill's use of all-rounder Shardul Thakur. In the first innings, Thakur bowled only six overs, raising concerns about Gill's confidence in him.

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin emphasized the importance of utilizing Shardul effectively: "Shardul is a good cricketer and he has a decent match-up with Joe Root. When you’re playing in England, the ball sometimes stops doing anything after the first 40 overs. If Shardul is playing, he should be bowling more during that phase."

Despite the challenges, Gill maintained a composed demeanor on the field, reflecting the experience gained from leading Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He doesn't possess the overt aggression of a Virat Kohli or the easily readable emotions of a Rohit Sharma.

However, his field placements on the fifth morning drew some criticism. The defensive field setup early on may have given England's openers, Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, a psychological advantage. Furthermore, the delayed re-introduction of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja when Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse were scoring freely proved costly.

The situation demands bold decisions from Gill. One such decision might be the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI. Historically, captains like Tiger Pataudi and Virat Kohli have made radical calls that have significantly impacted the team's performance.

The question now is whether Gill will be bold enough to adjust the batting lineup and include five genuine bowlers for the second Test. Such a move could be a masterstroke or a misstep, but it's a risk that comes with the territory of leading the Indian cricket team.
