Following India's defeat to England in the first Test at Headingley, head coach Gautam Gambhir has emphasized the importance of team performance over individual achievements. Despite Rishabh Pant's impressive twin centuries, Gambhir remained focused on the overall result.
When questioned about whether Pant's centuries were a positive takeaway from the loss, Gambhir dismissed the notion. He pointed out that other batsmen also scored centuries, highlighting the collective effort.
"There are three more centuries as well. Those are big positives as well. Thank you," Gambhir stated, according to PTI, indicating his priority on the team's performance rather than individual accolades.
Despite accumulating a substantial 835 runs across both innings, India failed to defend a target of 371 in the final innings. England achieved a historic chase, propelled by Ben Duckett's blistering 149 and significant contributions from Zak Crawley and Joe Root.
The match marked an unprecedented event, as it was the first time a team had lost a Test match after scoring five centuries.
In other team news, fast bowler Harshit Rana has been released from the squad prior to the second Test. Rana, initially included as injury cover, was not with the team when they left Leeds for Birmingham. Gambhir confirmed that with no persisting injury concerns, Rana would return home.
"I haven’t spoken to the chairman of selectors yet, but there was a bit of a niggle in the group. That’s why we wanted him as backup. But at the moment, everything looks fine,” Gambhir stated during a press conference.
India now has a two-day window to recover before the second Test at Edgbaston on July 2. England currently leads the five-match series 1-0, placing pressure on the visitors to mount a comeback. For Gambhir, the focus remains on results rather than individual reputations as the series progresses.
