Former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has called on captain Shubman Gill to strategically utilize all-rounder Shardul Thakur more effectively in the upcoming second Test match. This advice comes in the wake of India's recent 5-wicket defeat to England at Headingley, Leeds, where Thakur's contributions were underwhelming. He managed just five runs across both innings and secured only two wickets in his 16 overs.
Rahane emphasized the pivotal role of a genuine all-rounder in Test cricket on his YouTube channel, focusing on what he perceived as Thakur's under-utilization in the first Test.
"I believe an all-rounder's role is incredibly vital. Shardul Thakur is an experienced player with a proven track record in overseas Test matches. I'd like to see him bowl more overs," Rahane stated. "If the Indian team can harness Shardul Thakur's abilities more effectively, it would be fantastic. From what I've observed, he can swing the ball both ways and is a genuine wicket-taker. If Shardul is given the new ball or bowls first change, he can exploit that swing."
Rahane proposed adjustments to the bowling strategy to maximize Thakur's impact.
"With the Dukes ball, it typically starts to exhibit movement after 10 to 12 overs. If Shardul opens the bowling alongside Bumrah, and Siraj comes in as the first change, that would be an excellent approach. I want to see Shardul bowling more overs. Give him that freedom; he will get you more wickets," he asserted.
If Shardul can start the bowling with Bumrah and Siraj can come in as one change, that will be great
While praising Jasprit Bumrah's efforts, Rahane stressed the importance of consistent support from the other bowlers. "Bumrah's five-wicket haul in the first innings was outstanding. Beyond the wickets themselves, I was impressed by his intent. The way he charged in during his run-up and his intensity throughout his spells were remarkable. His lines and lengths were spot on, and his approach was consistently aggressive," Rahane commented.
"What I'd like to see is support from the other end. Bumrah is bowling attacking lengths, but if Siraj and Prasidh can provide support, it would be beneficial. We don't want Bumrah to be overwhelmed and forced to bowl too many overs, which would put undue pressure on the team. I want Siraj to embrace that responsibility, and Prasidh as well if he plays in the second Test," he concluded.
