Former India coach Greg Chappell believes that Rishabh Pant is transforming the landscape of cricket with his unconventional and aggressive batting style. Chappell lauded Pant as a "match-winner," emphasizing his potential to single-handedly alter the course of a game, referencing his performance at Headingley.
Despite India's loss in the Headingley Test, Pant's remarkable performance, marked by centuries in both innings, underscored his exceptional ability to shift the momentum of a match.
Chappell highlighted the significance of Pant's rapid scoring rate, asserting that it provides teams with the time necessary to secure victories. He described Pant's performance as "phenomenal," noting that some of his shots defy traditional coaching manuals. "He is reinventing the game as a batsman," Chappell added, showering praise on the Indian wicketkeeper.
Pant's achievement at Headingley places him among an elite group, making him only the second wicketkeeper-batter, following Andy Flower, to achieve the feat of scoring a century in each innings of a Test match.
Speaking at a promotional event in Mumbai, Chappell acknowledged the impact of modern technology and advancements in bat design, enabling shots that were previously impossible. However, he emphasized Pant's unique and captivating style, stating, "man, he's exciting to watch. You never quite know what to expect from the first ball at any stage… it keeps the opposition on their toes."
Drawing comparisons to another iconic wicketkeeper, Adam Gilchrist, Chappell, widely regarded as one of Australia's finest batters after Don Bradman, recognized the similarities in their game-changing potential.
"What an exciting cricketer, what a player to have on your team," Chappell remarked. "When I first saw him… he reminded me very much of Adam Gilchrist. You know the difference that it can make to a team to have a wicketkeeper that can bat at that level and score runs quickly."
Gill's Captaincy Shows Promise
Chappell also commented on Shubman Gill's performance as captain, suggesting that he displayed promising leadership qualities and is poised for further improvement. He acknowledged India's defeat but highlighted the positives, stating, "Shubman Gill had a great start to his career as a Test match captain."
He added, "He will only get better and better as a captain… I think he made a very good start as captain."
